Рад Асако Широки заснива се на процесима и делима која се изводе из природних материјала и облика од којих су и сачињени. Те структуралне пластике призивају и гледаочево сећање на делове намештаја (дрвене летве и палете), али затим то сећање бива деконструисано и усмерено ка нестајању и ништавилу – ка територији где нема места сећању. Овај поступак разотрива нам свет који је лишен уобичајених значења и асоцијација. Крећући се, потпуно независно, између света где је сопство одређено стварима и света где су ствари одређене сопством, она покушава да одмота и протумачи те паралелне светове, стално осцилирајући између вечног понављања сећања и ништавила.
Њен рад започиње тако што изабере парче дрвета и почне да га тестерише.  У том тренутку идеја о фукционалности се заборавља и она ствара облик из својих  покрета и саме  идеје. Служи се традиционалним јапанским столарским техникама и старим алатом и ради без употребе металних спојки. Радећи на овај начин она нам открива сам поступак, и чин стварања дела,  пре  него било коју појединачну технику.  Њу интересује однос негатива и позитива, како да постави  предмете да се држе, стоје и буду у равнотежи у простору.  Све ово са собом носи не само филозофско значење већ има и практичну и естетску димензију: свест о празнини – у Јапану ма – која покреће њен рад, супротстављена је западњачкој идеји празнине и нуди заводљиво језгро око којег се сва материја врти и којој се мора пре или касније вратити.

Асако Широки (р 1979, Токијо) Живи у ради у Берлину, Немачка и Токију, Јапан. Докторирала је на Ликовној академији, Универзитета уметности у Токију, Јапан (2008). Учествовала је у међународном студијском програму у Künstlerhaus Bethanien у Берлину (2013–2014).

At the 56th October Salon, Belgrade 2016,  curated by Davide Elliot, Asako Shiroki  won the Cultural Centre of Belgrade Award, which entails organising a solo exhibition of her work at one of the Centre’s galleries.
The Cultural Centre of Belgrade  has a pleasure to present her solo exhibition Your Voice, Echoed at the Art Gallery in October 2019.
Asako Shiroki’s work revolves around various actions and processes that are derived from the natural materials and forms out of which it is made. Its sculptural structure evokes the viewer’s recollection because it seems to resemble fragments of furniture (wooden grids or frames), but then a process of deconstruction takes place as the impression of these objects is oriented towards a sense of disappearance and oblivion – a territory that no place for memory. This discloses a world of objects bereft of conventional meanings and associations. Working autonomously between a territory of self-defined-by-things and one of things-defined-by-self, she attempts to unfold and interpret two parallel worlds, oscillating between perpetually repeated cycles of recollection and oblivion. Her work begins when she first takes a piece of wood and starts sawing it. Then all idea of function is lost as she builds a form around her action and idea. She follows traditional
Japanese methods of carpentry using traditional tools and no metal fixings. In doing this she reveals the process, the motion and the act of making a work, rather than any particular technique, and her interest lies in the reflection of positives and negatives, of ways of getting things to hold, stand and balance in space. This has a philosophical as well as practical and aesthetic dimension: the idea of emptiness ‒ in Japanese ma ‒ that animates her work, in contrast with the existential negativity of the western idea of void, provides an infinite and seductive core around which all matter revolves and to which it must ultimately revert.

Asako Shiroki (b. 1979, Tokyo) currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany and Tokyo, Japan. She completed her Ph.D. in Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts and participated in the International Studio Program in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin(2013-2014).
