Novi Pazar. Splitting Image
Dina Tajić and Irfan Ličina
Photographs by Dina Tajić and Irfan Ličina deal with Novi Pazar.
Irfan, who is a photojournalism professional, with his keen sense of detail, in this series of warm, subjective photos, moves along the margins and builds a narrative about the community.
With her youthful and fresh photographic perspective, Dina locates her subjects in the field of the imaginary, fairytale-like and utopian. Female character in the photos by Dina Tajić is situated in a register which is simultaneously ingenuous and subversive, depending on the other to which she relates.
The two authors offer their own perspectives of the same location; these are (expectedly) unlike, yet the differences enable us to construct the context in which the narrative itself would be able to communicate the diversity of references as broadly as possible, and thus make visible the specific characteristics of the community that the exhibited photographs refer to.
Biographies:
Dina Tajić (2002, Novi Pazar) is a student of the International University in Novi Pazar. During her academic studies, she has dedicated her attention and artistic efforts to graphic design and painting. By perfecting her artistic practice in these fields, she managed to develop skills of communicating via visual elements, and to examine different techniques of expression. The medium of photography found its natural place in her artistic practice a couple of years ago, and in discovering the characteristics of the medium and learning about it, she developed her own poetics of photographic storytelling. To record moments and emotions, events and landscapes has been a source of endless inspiration. She likes to engage in collaborative artistic practices.
Irfan Ličina (1990, Novi Pazar) became interested in journalistic photography at a very young age. His today’s practice has been oriented towards documentary and street photography. He has, by now, had three solo, and participated in over 40 group exhibitions in the country and abroad. He was also involved in a number of master class workshops, with the following three being especially significant: Focusing Democracy, Novi Sad 2013; Forhana World Press Photo, Belgrade 2018; and Festival of the Image VII Photo Agency, Sarajevo 2019. He partook in different workshops and roundtables dealing with the development of artistic and photographic culture, both as a lecturer and a guest, and participated in the art colony titled Sanjak Inspiring Artists (Sandžak inspiracija umjetnika), Novi Pazar 2016. He received a number of photographic awards, both regionally and internationally, and his work is a part of the collection of the Historical Museum in Belgrade. He worked as a photojournalist for Tanjug, Croatian news agency Pixsell, and Vice Media in Serbia, and he currently works as a photojournalist for the Nova.rs news portal, BBC Serbia, as well as for one of the three largest news agencies in the world Agence France Press. His photographs have been published in all major newspapers and magazines in Serbia and the region, as well as in the globally renowned media outlets such as National Geographic, The Guardian, BBC, L’Est Républicain, Baztab News Arabia, TRT World and DW. He is a member of the Association of the Photojournalists of Serbia, as well as of the Photography and Cinema Club of Novi Pazar, where he currently occupies the position of the Chairman.
